Buying guide
Smart plug buying basics
Smart plugs are useful when the job is simple: switching a lamp, fan, small appliance, or seasonal device on a schedule or voice command. Before buying, confirm the plug type, maximum load, app requirements, wireless standard, and whether the device should keep working if the internet is unavailable.
Check first
- Outlet shape and space around the socket.
- Electrical load and whether the device has a physical on/off state.
- App, hub, Matter, Wi-Fi, or voice-assistant compatibility.
Avoid when
- The device draws more power than the plug supports.
- The appliance should not be remotely powered for safety reasons.
- You need detailed energy tracking and the plug does not provide it.
